Turn the Page and Enjoy Peak Season Before It Fades Away
September starts on Sunday. I don't want to scare anyone, but this means we're turning a corner toward the end of our peak growing season. If above normal temperatures continue to be a rule rather than an exception, we may get to stretch the season, but don't dally.
Besides, Labor Day on Monday is as early as it gets. Why not celebrate with proteins (pastured meats or locally made tofu), sweet corn and other veggies, succulent melons and peaches, bakery treats and more for your weekend feasts? Sounds like an all-American way to celebrate the holiday — and salute the labors of our local farmers who produce all this delicious food for us.
The photo above is my haul from Chicago's Green City Market on Wednesday (August 28). There are Sweet Treat cherry tomatoes, red bell peppers, and green beans from Nichols Farm and Orchard (Marengo, Illinois); green Marquis seedless grapes from Mick Klug Farms (St. Joseph, Michigan); and sesame bagels and a peach danish from Dorothy's Bakery (Chicago).
I hope you have a great haul for the holiday too.
