A must for local tomato growers, but a fun excursion into Tomatoland for all

February and fun aren't exactly synonymous in Chicago. But one thing to which I do look forward every year is scrolling through the amazing varieties of tomatoes that Chicago Tomato Man — also known as Bob Zeni — will be selling as starter plants.
My good friend Bob sent out an email announcing that his 2025 selection is up on his website (there's a button below) for preview. Previous customers will get first crack at these beauties starting February 21. The e-commerce site officially opens to the public in March.
When you place an order, you'll choose from among a range of locations around Chicago metro to pick up your starter plants from late April through early June.
Even if you consider yourself a tomato-ficionado, I venture you'll be amazed at the varieties — in all kinds of shapes, sizes, colors and sometimes fanciful names — of the 187 (!) types of tomatoes that Chicago Tomato Man plans to sell for the 2025 season.
So consider this a heads up. And if the snowstorm that's in the forecast for this Wednesday materializes, then browse their site in the comfort of your own home, with visions of the warm summer days of peak tomato season.
