Late Summer Sojourn at One of the City's Natural Beauty Spots
I didn't know much about Chicago when I made my first family visit with Barb more than 40 years ago. What struck me immediately during my very first visit was the amazing natural environment in which the city resides. It has inspired me ever since and prompted me to elevate my photography skills after we moved here in 2011.
We are lucky, as residents of the North Side's Lakeview neighborhood, to live quite near North Pond, a bird sanctuary located in the city's Lincoln Park. It is a place of peace for me, a beauty spot in the midst of Chicago's metropolitan bustle.
A lengthy spell of heat and humidity broke over the past weekend. Beautiful weather days are precious here, so Barb and I visited North Pond on Monday (September 2) to take advantage.
This isn't about food, but if you're reading Local Food Forum, chances are you also are a nature lover who will indulge me as I share some photos.
When we got off the city bus and walked over to the pond, our day was already made — because the Great Blue Heron in the photo above was the first thing we saw.
Great Blue sightings are not all that rare at North Pond, but they aren't common either, so it's a real treat to see one up relatively close.
The bird make a lightning strike into the water and came up with a fish.
While the Great Blue was the highlight of our visit, I enjoy this photo of another member of the heron family and a sun-bathing turtle ignoring each other.
Same bird, closer up.
A flock of geese, splashing down.
And some other pretty pictures.
