Connect With South Side's Food Culture at Chicago Urban Ag Crawl

Event Underscores Food's Role in Restoring Hope in Under-Resourced Communities

Urban farms and other food-related businesses play an important role in addressing food insecurity and improving food access on Chicago's South Side, helping to restore jobs, opportunity and hope in economically challenged communities. If you haven't seen this up close, the 3rd annual Chicago Urban Ag Crawl & Backyard BBQ will be a great chance to do so.

The Crawl is a multi-site event that will take place on Sunday, September 8 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. The main locations are:

  • Growing Home Urban Farm (West Englewood): Growing Home, located at 5814 S. Wood St., has been a leader in urban agriculture in Englewood since 2006 with their job training & fresh food programs. It has gained particular acclaim for providing farm experience and training for formerly incarcerated individuals. Their farms are used as a job training site, market site, public resource center and farm-to-table events. Growing Home anticipates a major expansion of its operations after being named the recipient of a $5 million city of Chicago grant.

  • Green Era Campus (Auburn Gresham): Green Era is a major new development for Urban Growers Collective, which runs several urban farms on the city's South and West sides and recently obtained land outside the city in southern Cook County through a partnership with The Conservation Fund non-profit. The Green Era Campus, at 650 W. 83rd St., is transforming a nine-acre vacant brownfield into a renewable enegy facility and green oasis for economic empowerment, clean energy, fresh produce and vibrant communities.

  • Grow Greater Englewood Village Plaza (Englewood): A non-profit land and food sovereignty leader, Grow Greater Englewood works with residents and developers to create sustainable local food economies and green businesses. The organization manages the Englewood Village Plaza at a beautiful urban agriculture event space at 5822 S. Halsted St.

According to the organizers, the event will feature delicious food and drinks from local chefs and caterers, live music, South Side urban farm and garden trolley tours, garden activities, raffles, games and more.
