Get Greens and Herbs Growing Tips from Urban Farming Expert David Toledo
Plant Chicago is a non-profit based in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood that promotes circular economies, promoting urban food production and waste reduction. The organization, located at 4459 S. Marshfield Ave., is presenting two classes on Saturday, September 21 that adhere to its mission.
The first of these classes, scheduled from 11:30 to 1 p.m., features urban farming expert David Toledo of Contemporary Farmer Inc., who will share best practices when growing greens and herbs indoors.
Chicago-based Contemporary Farmer Inc. describes itself as "a social enterprise that aims to empower people to develop edible spaces in their homes in order to redefine their relationships with nature and local food systems." It provides learning programs to "spread awareness of regenerative agriculture practices to farmers, gardeners and home-growers of all ages, scales, and skill levels."

The second class features Sam Smithson of Culture Box LLC, whose discussion from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. is titled Seal the Flavor: Local Preservation Workshop. The topic is spot on for Sam, as Culture Box provides monthly subscription boxes of locally sourced fermented products. Unfortunately, the ticket site says sales for this class have ended.
