Cooking School Competition to Benefit Chicago's Common Pantry

The Chopping Block event takes place September 12

The generosity and philanthropic bent of Chicago's culinary community is one of Local Food Forum's favorite topics. So I'm pleased to share this fun-sounding event that The Chopping Block cooking school is planning for the evening of September 12.

Titled Mystery Pantry Chef Competition, the event will provide proceeds for Common Pantry, a food bank located not far from the school's location (4747 N. Lincoln Ave. in the Lincoln Square community).

According to The Chopping Block, "Common Pantry meets the emergency needs of the local community by providing healthy food, kinship and support to help overcome poverty and economic-related challenges." The event takes place during Hunger Action Month.

The competition pits four chefs from The Chopping Block team: "The Chefs will be given 90 minutes to prepare a complete dish utilizing mystery pantry ingredients that must be included in their food, all while engaging with the students throughout the evening. Watch our Chefs rely on their instincts and quick-thinking skills to create creative and delicious dishes for our panel of judges. Chefs will plate up tasting portions of their creations for everyone to taste, and the judges will announce a winner at the end of the event."
