Are you an adult (of any age) with a passion for hyperlocal food for all, sustainability and community — and are willing to learn while getting your hands in the dirt? Then you should check out the Evanston Grows non-profit and its Urban Agriculture Internships.

Evanston Grows was launched in April 2021, to bring together diverse stakeholders —including non-profits, community gardens, private residences, schools and businesses — to develop a common agenda and solutions for addressing the inequity in the suburban Chicago community, which has resulted in food injustice.

Says the organization's website, "In short, the Evanston Grows collective works together to increase locally grown free fresh food to share!"

Laurell Sims, Evanston Grows' executive director, formerly served as co-founder and CEO at the Chicago-based Urban Growers Collective.

The internship program provides a real hands-on experience in organic and sustainable farming: Seeding, transplanting, harvesting, plant care and more. No previous farming experience is necessary. Participants are expected to provide 10 to 15 hours of work per work, from Mondays to Fridays.

Urban farming-curious? Contact Matt Ryan, Evanston Grows director of farm operations, to learn more and apply.
