Farmers Who Deliver Expand Local Food Access

Three Sisters Garden is a Leading Example in the Chicago Region

With just a few exceptions, most of the Chicago region's outdoor markets will have wrapped up their 2024 seasons by the end of this week. That means local food lovers may have to get a bit creative to get the stuff that they love.

Farms that deliver products directly to your home are few, but it is a super-convenient option if you can find it.

My go-to is Three Sisters Garden in Kankakee, Illinois. Farmer-owner Tracey Vowell was a longtime mainstay at Chicago's Green City Market, where she built a loyal customer base. When the COVID pandemic hit in 2020 and delayed the spring opening of the outdoor market season, those customers enabled her to pivot quickly to home delivery.

It went so well that she has done only home delivery every since, making twice weekly trips north to Chicago throughout her spring to winter growing season.

Local food for the next few months in our region will be mostly storage root vegetables, a variety of squashes, storage apples and greens. Fortunately, I love all of those things, as my most recent Three Sisters Garden haul in the photo above reveals.

Those are a pie pumpkin, Carnival squash, potatoes and rainbow carrots. Tracey wrote in her email newsletter this past weekend that her sweet winter spinach is right around the corner.

I'll be seeking out more farms doing home delivery to share with you over the cold months to come. In the meantime, learn more about Three Sisters Garden by clicking the button below.

One way that I amuse myself is finding unusually shaped produce. Such as this potato that was in that Three Sisters Garden delivery.

Some people briefly obtain a following by seeing a vision of the Virgin Mary in their toast. I get Mickey Mouse in a potato.
