For Farmers Looking to Scale Up, These Workshops Could Help

Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs is Holding Multiple Events Across the State



Say you are a farmer (or you know one) who has established a solid customer base and is looking into "scaling up," meaning producing to meet the needd of wholesale buyers who can help build your farm business.


If this describes you, you may be interested in one of the IProject ReFED workshops on scaling up to wholesale. The workshops, presented by Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs, are being presented across the state from January 8 through February 16.


According to information shared by Illinois Stewardship Alliance, farmers and food business entrepreneurs will learn how to prepare themselves and their businesses for selling to wholesale buyers.


Topics include:


  • Small farm bookkeeping basics

  • Business planning for local food producers

  • Business planning for small meat processors

  • Considerations when scaling to wholesale markets

  • Marketing for food producers

  • Risk management in food production


The workshop series will kick off at the Farmers Rising non-profit in Caledonia on January 8. Here's is the full list of cities hosting the events:

Most of the workshops are expected to run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The workshops are free and include lunch. The Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs is based at Western Illinois University in Macomb.
