Dodging Remnants of Hurricane Helene to Get Fed
The last Saturday of September dawned cloudy. It was breezy but fortunately just a drizzle of rain from the remnants of monster Hurricane Helene that are creating inland havoc to our south.
Knowing that gloomy weather days are when our farmer-vendors need us most, I darted out early this morning to do a quick farmers market sweep. It wasn't a photogenic morning so I'm just cutting to the chase with my Green City Market haul photo.
While we clearly are in the transition from the peak season crops to autumn, you can see in the above photo that my haul was still more summer than fall. Gotta get it while you can, which explains why I currently have so much zucchini in the fridge.
There's also most of a ratatouille in the making right in that picture.
The details, from left: Delicata squash, eggplant, green beans and zucchini from Nichols Farm and Orchard (Marengo, Illinois); SunGold cherry tomatoes from Tomato Mountain (Brooklyn, Wisconsin); plum tomatoes from Kajers Greens (North Judson, Indiana); and Niagara grapes from Mick Klug Farms (St. Joseph, Michigan). I hit all four states in the Lake Michigan region!
Just a reminder that most of the Chicago region's outdoor farmers markets keep going through October, and some hang in there until just before Thanksgiving. Our local farmers do so much for us, let's keep supporting them.
