I make no secret of the fact that I am a fan of the Just Roots non-profit and its small farms in the Bronzeville neighborhood on Chicago's South Side and in the south suburban city of Sauk Village.

Their focus is on expanding access to healthy, delicious fresh food for underserved individuals and families who live near their farms. To financially support this mission, Just Roots has a CSA subscription program — which I have joined this year, with my first bi-weekly pickup on May 10.

Now, you will have the opportunity to meet and learn more about Just Roots at their Farm Kick-offs, to be held on consecutive Saturdays in June.

Here's the elevator pitch from Just Roots:

At these annual events, we come together to celebrate the start of the growing season with fresh food and a variety of family-friendly activities. At each event, you can expect

  • Fresh food at our Farm Stand

  • Free Seedlings

  • Farm-fresh food tastings paired with a cooking demonstration

  • Art and horticulture projects

  • Other family-friendly activities

These events, which are free and open to the public, are a great way to get involved with Just Roots for the first time or reconnect with our community at the start of the growing season.

The second event will take place on Saturday, June 14, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the farm located at 2500 233rd St. in Sauk Village.
