Organic Ag Interests Push Back on Regenerative Label

Campaign by Organic Foundation States That Organic is Regenerative

The term "regenerative agriculture" has come into vogue in recent years, and I've used it many times in Local Food Forum. Combining longstanding concerns about soil health with a belief that its practices sequester carbon in soil and reduce climate change, regenerative farming is sometimes described as "Organic+."

But there are many farmers who have invested much effort to obtaining and maintaining the USDA Organic label, believe organic practices are better for people and the planet, and — unlike regenerative — organic is clearly defined in federal law and regulation.

A campaign launched by the Organic Farming Research Foundation, under the heading of "Organic is Regenerative," indicates that the community of organic advocates is pushing back.

The digital flyer produced by the organization, shown above, states, "Organic farmers have long been engaged in systems-based regenerative approaches, yet organic is often overlooked in the conversation about climate solutions... Organic is the original climate-smart agriculture." It goes on to say, "We found consistent support for the understanding that when practiced well, organic IS regenerative."

The flyer is part of a toolkit created by the Foundation that includes other messaging tools, including a 35-slide deck and social media content. If you are an advocate of organic agriculture, these well-produced tools can help you shape your arguments. If you are all-in on regenerative agriculture, I recommend you review the materials to get a better understanding of why organic agriculture is so strongly defended by its advocates.
