Non-Profit Organization Takes Strong Stand That Organic Means Grown in Soil

Real Organic Project — a non-profit founded on the belief that food needs to be grown in soil to be labeled organic — is accepting applications for its 2025 no-cost certification program.

The organization states that the program's purpose is to uplift "USDA organic certified farmers who steward their crops and livestock with ecological integrity. Real Organic Farms are free from hydroponics, confined animal operations, and prohibited herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers.  We offer a whole-farm certification that recognizes the exemplary work our farmers do across all aspects of their farm operation — soil, crops, livestock, and labor."

Real Organic Project grew out of pushback against the USDA rulings that, under certain circumstances, crops grown hydroponically without soil and animals raised in confinement rather than pasture could qualify for USDA organic certification. The divisions over USDA standards are among the biggest controversies within the sustainable agriculture community.

If you believe that you meet Real Organic Project's standards and want to apply for the certification program, click the 1st button below. If you need further information, there is a contact button at the bottom of the application page.

Applicants must be received by April 15.
