Urban Growers Collective Helps You Dispose of Trees the Natural Way
Christmas trees are among the lovelier features of the holiday season. The downside, alas, is that millions of live trees go into the waste stream and end up in landfills.
Leave it to Chicago's Urban Growers Collective — the social mission-driven network of urban farms — to come up with the most natural Christmas tree disposal idea. They invite you to bring your tree to their flagship South Chicago Farm at (9001 S. Mackinaw Ave/entrance on 90th St.), and their farmers will feed them to their plant-loving goats.
Trees must be devoid of any lights, decorations (ornaments, tinsel, etc.), metal objects such as hooks, and fire retardant sprays.
The farm will be open to receive trees from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through January 11.
If you can't make it out to the farm, the city of Chicago provides another great green alternative for Christmas tree disposal: Christmas trees can be dropped off at collection sites in 27 city parks between January 11 to 25 during normal park hours. The city will then grind the trees into mulch.
As with Urban Growers Collective, the city will only accept trees that are stripped of any decorations or extraneous materials.
Bonus: The city will be handing out free Christmas tree mulch at six locations on a first-come, first-served basis.
