The Weather Outside Was Frightful But It Didn't Stop a Crowd from Coming

This is Barb's and my 14th winter living in Chicago, and we had many chilly visits in the 30 years prior. So I'm well aware that a) winter is Chicago is cold and b) sometimes winter in Chicago is very, very cold.

So while I don't go out of my way to challenge those Wind Chill Danger warnings, nor am I averse to slapping on a few layers of clothes and going outside — especially when local food is involved.

Eight degrees air temp with near-zero wind chill be damned, I made it two weeks in a row at the new South Loop Indoor Sunday Farmers Market at downtown Chicago's Water Tower Place shopping center today (January 19).

I was not alone, not hardly. While opening day on the previous Sunday drew some nice traffic, today the market was just packed.

OK, so I did a write-up about the market, and attendance jumped a lot this week. Coincidence? (Just kidding, of course.)

As I mentioned in last week's story, the South Loop indoor market is a mix of farm produce and meat, packaged/specialty goods, and grab-and-go meals.

While all those clothing layers protect from frostbite, they get old real fast the longer you spend indoors. So I didn't linger long.

My market haul: white mushrooms from River Valley Ranch (Burlington, Wisconsin); Evercrisp apples from Hebron Farms (Vandalia, Michigan); ham slices and ground chicken from Bennett Farms (Edwardsburg, Michigan); bialys from Zeitlin's Delicatessen (Chicago); baked doughnuts from Daly's Donuts (Chicago); and sweet potatoes and onions from Jacobson Family Farms (Antioch, Illinois).
