Thursday: Online Events Feature School Food, LGBTQ+ Farmers

Tune Into Free Events by USDA and a Coalition of Groups

Sorry about the short notice, but there are a couple of free online events Thursday (August 29) that are worthy of your attention.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of Education are holding a joint online event Thursday beginning at 12:45 p.m. central time to highlight efforts to improve the school meals served to millions of the nation's children.

Titled "Virtual Back to School Pep Rally: Celebrating Healthy School Meals," the event will feature Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Education Secretary Miguel Cardona with an introduction by Needa Tanden, policy advisor to President Joseph R. Biden.

According to the organizers, "The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Education are thrilled to be teaming up with a wide range of education and school meal partners to celebrate the back to school season and the important role school meals play in providing the fuel kids need to succeed in the classroom."

Here's the information you need to tune in.

"Setting the Table for a Better Food and Farm Future with LGBTQ+ Farmers" is an online discussion that will be held on Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m. central. The event is a joint partnership of non-profits Illinois Stewardship Alliance and Farmers Rising as well as Pink Tiger Farm of Goreville, Illinois.

Here is the promotional email sent out by Liz Stelk, executive director of Illinois Stewardship Alliance:

For too long, decisions about food and farming have been made without the LGBTQ+ community, and these decisions have rippled across the food system, affecting who has access to land, food, and resources.

In order to transition to a just and regenerative food system that truly values and reflects the people it serves, LGBTQ+ stories, experiences, and vision must be shared and valued.

Illinois Stewardship Alliance, Farmers Rising, and Pink Tiger Farm want to hear from LGBTQ+ farmers and food system leaders, including market managers, farm-to-table chefs, and community food project leaders.
