Join Us at Green City Market in Lincoln Park

[Correction: Green City Market's Saturday markets will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through April. The 7-1 hours will begin on May 3 and continue through the remainder of the outdoor season.]

There are many ways to declare the official start of spring. The vernal equinox, of course. Baseball opening day. The first flowers, bursting tree buds, rabbits, and geese flying north.

And, of course, the kickoff to the Chicago region's nearly nine-month-long outdoor farmers market season, which takes place on Saturday (April 5) from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Green City Market's flagship Lincoln Park location, 1817 N. Clark St.

This is the fourth year in which Green City has rolled the dice on Chicago weather by opening on the first Saturday in April. They may have had a comfortably warm opening day or two, but this doesn't appear to be one of those years (that's the forecast from weather.com in the graphic above).

Nonetheless, this forecast is about what you'd expect for April 5 and it looks dry. So let's put on a coat, get out there and celebrate our local food community.

There are still several indoor markets open and they'll overlap with the start of the outdoor season. In fact, we just got word that the Sunday South Loop Farmers Market in downtown Chicago's Water Tower Place mall — which has been a big hit since its opening in January — is blowing past its previously scheduled March 30 closing date and will remain open through May 18.

The following schedule shows the four regional outdoor market openings in April, followed by the remaining indoor markets.

Please buy local and support our region's small farms.
